Covid19 tally tops 1,00,000Health workers administering the COVID-19 vaccine, in the presence of the Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, during the 1st phase of the pan India rollout of COVID-19 vaccination drive, at AIIMS, New Delhi on January 16, 2021.

India’s daily COVID cases have increased ten-fold in just a matter of ten days.

India reported an increase in daily COVID-19 cases, with Mumbai and Delhi witnessing a massive surge driven by the Omicron variant.

Mumbai reported a 33 percent hike in daily cases with an all-time high of 20,000 infections. 85 percent of the cases seeming to be asymptomatic.

Actor Swara Bhasker as well as about 20 staff members of Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil tested positive for COVID-19.

Despite the spike, the state government has not yet considered shutting down local transport in Mumbai nor imposing lockdown-like curbs and inter-district travel curbs.

Mumbai saw a similar spike during the second wave too, but this time around the demand for medical oxygen and the number of deaths or ICU admissions have not increased, which was seen a positive sign about the end of the pandemic being in sight, Tope said.

This can be attributed to the fact that Mumbai has achieved nearly 100 per cent vaccination, he added.

Delhi is expected to add nearly 17,000 Covid19 cases today, according to Health Minister Satyendar Jain. He attributed the surge in cases in the capital to the number of international flights landing in the capital.

The government has mandated all international passengers to undergo home quarantine for 7 days upon arrival.

Over 150 crore COVID19 vaccine doses have been administered in India so far, with, over 91 per cent of the adult population having received at least one dose while over 66 per cent are fully vaccinated.
