With temperatures soaring above 44°C, Gujarat prepares for a heat wave, prompting safety alerts in Saurashtra and Kutch.
While Gujarat grapples with scorching summer temperatures, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a yellow warning for heat wave conditions in various regions of the state, especially the Saurashtra-Kutch. The warning is in effect for the next 48 hours, up to 8:30 AM April 30, 2025.
Hiking Temperatures Raise IMD Alert
As per the latest bulletin, daytime temperatures have crossed 44°C in some districts prompting the IMD to mark Rajkot, Surendranagar, Morbi, and Kutch as high-risk areas for heat wave conditions. The department issued a warning that these conditions would prevail at isolated pockets during the alert period.
“Heat wave conditions are very likely to prevail over these districts,” said the IMD, asking people to take adequate precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Temperature Trends: No Relief in Sight for Now
The IMD report further states that no significant change in maximum temperatures is anticipated over the region in the next five days. But from May 1st onwards, temperatures can dip slightly by 2–3°C, providing some relief.
Until then, maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 40°C and 45°C, putting a major portion of the state under severe thermal stress.
Hot and Humid Conditions Along the Coast
In addition to high daytime temperatures, discomfort due to hot and humid air is expected to dominate coastal regions of South Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch from April 28 to May 1.
The IMD advises people in these regions to limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and wear light, breathable clothing to minimize the risk of heat exhaustion and related health issues.
Precautionary Measures and Public Safety
Authorities have been asked to keep vulnerable groups under surveillance, including the elderly, infants, and outdoor laborers, as these are the most vulnerable to heat stroke. Health services and emergency response teams are being prepared for higher demand due to the hot weather.
Yellow alert is an appeal for preparedness, and though less extreme than an orange or red alert, it appeals for caution and public awareness.
