How to Deal with The Aftermath After a Car Crash?

There are around 14,386 car crashes each day in the US, which lead to 7,507 injuries and 99 deaths. The NHTSA reported 2,282,015 injuries in traffic accidents in 2020. Given how common car accidents are, it’s important to know what to do when one happens.

If you got into a vehicle collision, here are the most important steps you need to take:

Consult an Experienced Car Accident Attorney if Needed

For serious motor vehicle crashes, it can be beneficial to contact car accident lawyers. They can advocate for you in the insurance claims process and help you understand your legal rights and options. A car crash attorney can also pursue compensation in court if a settlement offer appears unreasonable. Many auto accident attorneys work on a contingency fee basis so you don’t have to pay anything upfront.

Try not to worry if you are caught up in a car accident. Focus on your recovery and let your lawyer handle the rest.

Stay Calm and Assess the Car Crash

In the immediate aftermath of a car crash, it’s important to remain calm and assess the situation around you. Take stock of any injuries you may have sustained and of your surroundings. Try to move in a way that avoids aggravating any injuries but get yourself to a safe location by the side of the road if possible. Turn off your vehicle’s ignition and activate your hazard lights. Check for leaking gas, smoke, or other signs that may indicate a fire risk. If you have passengers, ask if they are hurt and render aid if you can safely do so. Avoid moving anyone with major injuries unless there is further danger. Call emergency services if anyone is hurt.

Getting emergency medical assistance right away can make a big difference, especially for things like head injuries – in 2016 and 2017, car accidents were the third leading cause of TBI deaths.

Exchange Information With the Other Driver

If others were involved in the accident and it is safe to interact with them, exchange contact and insurance information. Get their name, phone number, address, driver’s license and license plate numbers, as well as insurance details. Also, note the make, model, color, and plate number of every vehicle involved. If there are any witnesses present, get their contact information too.

Get a Police Report and File a Report for the Car Accident

Always call the police and wait for them to arrive and file an accident report. Even for minor accidents, having an official police report to back up your version of events will be key for any insurance or legal proceedings later. The officers can direct traffic safely around the scene, take statements from everyone involved, assess damage and injuries, and call for additional emergency response if needed. Cooperate, but do not discuss fault or place blame when speaking with the police.

Seek Medical Attention Right After the Collision

Head to the emergency room or see your doctor right away to get thoroughly evaluated and establish medical documentation of any issues that arise from the accident. Follow recommended treatment plans and keep records of all related expenses.

Contact Your Car Insurance Provider

Call your auto insurance provider as soon as you can after the accident to start a claim. In 2022, there were 4.88 damage claims per 100 cars. Provide your policy details and information about what happened. Cooperate with any investigation and keep thorough records of damages, expenses, and communications related to the process. Understand your policy provisions for coverages like collision, liability, medical payments, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. You may need to get estimates for car repairs from recommended body shops – even a minor accident can cost upwards of $1,000. For injuries, keep track of doctor, hospital, therapy, medication, and any other expenses.
