With huge support from the voting public, Ukraine won the 2022 Eurovision song contest held in Italy. While Kalush’s performance was totally spectacular, this year’s contest tried to infuse a more direct meaning to what solidarity and peace meant. Like it or not, Ukraine’s profile has been impacted. Let’s see how Ukraine’s Eurovision win has impacted their overall ranking.
Better Recognition
Winning Eurovision may help change Ukraine’s narrative a bit as the attention it’s receiving as a war-torn country will shift towards being known as a champion in art. Ukraine will be viewed as a strong nation during this bleeding time as it can still reach out to the world through music, especially when the war is still ongoing.
Eurovision is designed to allow citizens of participating countries to vote. However, citizens of a country can’t vote for their own country’s participants but are allowed to vote for favourites in other countries. As you can see in research conducted by Betway, Ukraine has now won Eurovision three times since joining in 2004.
It’s clear that Ukraine’s win is both about solidarity and performance.
More Visible To Tourists
Being winners of the last Eurovision contest, Ukraine will be hosting the next contest if all goes as planned. If Ukraine successfully hosts the contest, its international image will greatly improve and become one of the world’s tourist destinations, as was the case with Azerbaijan back in 2012. A study of a nation’s economic impact and image improvement after hosting Eurovision shows a significant increase in revenue contributed by visitors’ expenditure.
Language Diversity
It will interest you to know that many people started searching to know the language spoken in Ukraine after the 20200 Eurovision win. It’s a no-brainer because people want to know more once a country is in the spotlight. And this year’s contest displayed more language diversity as a couple of performances out of the 25 finalists were delivered brilliantly in languages other than the usual English language. We can hope that Ukraine’s win will signal a boost to Ukraine’s music industry and language presence in the world.
