Veteran ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas has passed away at 72 after a prolonged illness on February 26, as confirmed by his family.
The singer’s family released a statement confirming the death of the ghazal maestro.
The statement read: ‘With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February due to a prolonged illness. Udhas family.’
The singer wasn’t well for the last few days and passed away at Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai today.
Pankaj Udhas was born in Jetpur in Gujarat. He is the youngest of the three brothers, born to Keshubhai Udhas and Jituben Udhas. His eldest brother Manhar Udhas also achieved some success as a Hindi playback singer in Bollywood films.
He started his career with an album titled ‘Aahat’ in 1980 and rose to fame with the popular song ‘Chitthi Aayi Hai‘ from the movie Naam in 1986.
The song was even picked as one of the top 100 songs of the millennium by BBC Radio worldwide.
One of his most memorable songs, ‘Chitthi Aayi Hai‘ became synonymous with his success.
