According to reports from multiple outlets, FBI agents searched former President Donald Trumps estate in Florida, as part of an investigation into Mr. Trumps handling of classified information.
The search was made public in a statement released by Mr. Trump, in which he said FBI agents were at his home.
‘Nothing like this has ever happened to a president of the United States before,’ he said in the statement. ‘After working and cooperating with the relevant government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate.’
‘They even broke into my safe!’ wrote Mr. Trump.
The search began Monday morning and reportedly lasted until the evening.
The Justice Department has been investigating several aspects of Mr. Trumps final days in office and this search seems to have been a significant move, as it is rare for such action to be taken on a former President.
Removing classified materials, such as official documents from government premises can attract a significant penalty, including a five-year jail term. It can also include disqualification from holding federal office.
Mr. Trump, who many believe, intends to run for office again in 2024, was in New York City Monday evening.
The FBIs move quickly became a call for support by many Republicans Monday.
