A firing and ‘lathi-charge’ incident that allegedly occurred during a Durga Visarjan ceremony in Bihar’s Munger left one person dead and many injured. A video purported to be that of the incident is doing the rounds of social media, attracting widespread condemnation.
Lok Janshakti Party chief Chirag Paswan on Wednesday asked the current government to take responsibility for the incident and order an investigation.
On Tuesday, the LJP president had sought strong action against Superintendent of Police Lipi Singh, tweeting that Section 302 (murder) be applied in registering a case against the Munger Police.
The alleged incident is said to have taken place the night between Monday and Tuesday, at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Chowk, under the Kotwali police station’s jurisdiction.
The chaos erupted when the idol was being ferried to the river bank for the final immersion. Some people claimed that the deceased, a man in his early 20s died in police firing. The administration alleges he was hit by a bullet fired by somebody from the crowd.
Notably, the first phase of Bihar Assembly Elections is being held in the Munger district and some other parts of the state today.
