Amitabh Bachchan is almost synonymous with the film industry, as the head of the first family of Bollywood.
In a glorious career spanning more than 50 years, ‘Big B’ as he is fondly known has constantly changed with times and tastes to rule the box-office.
The icon’s career can neatly be divided into multiple phases, kicked off by 1969’s ‘Saat Hindustani’ where he was a new face.
It was in the 70s that he became ‘the face’ of Bollywood. and established himself at the box-office with back-to-back hits such as Zanjeer, Sholay, Don and Deewar among many others, breaking records and making bank.
While he never returned to being the top box office draw, when he made a comeback in the 90s, his legendary status showed up in character-driven roles such as Piku, Pink etc.
Fellow Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan led wishes for the superstar, saying on Twitter ‘One thing to learn from this great man, actor, superstar, father and superhuman is to never back away….instead learn….level up and launch again and again….forever. May you always be healthy and entertain our grand children also. Love you sir @SrBachchan.’
Some cinemas are gearing up to hold a retrospective of Bachchan’s films over four days across cities, making it the biggest festival of its kind in the country.
