A heartwarming family entertainer full of laughs, feelings, and a witty glance at modern social media culture.
In a retro return, Malayalam cinema legend Dileep is back in “Prince and Family,” a heartwarming family drama that mixes comedy with contemporary commentary. Debutant director Binto Stephen gives us a film that recalls vintage Dileep magic while quietly targeting today’s influencer culture.
The Prince Chakkalakkal Story: A Middle-Aged Man on the Quest for Love
Prince Chakkalakkal is alone, middle-aged, and with the burden of his whole family on his back. Though the only breadwinner, what he really desires is a partner in life. His quest for “the one” is riddled with rejections, embarrassing experiences, and increased despair.
That is a change of scenery when an unexpected proposal comes from a matchmaking website — a transition that not just alters his relationship hopes but gets his family off on a track into unknown directions. What presents itself as pure chance brings out new challenges upon Prince, particularly when he gets to know his new wife turns out to be a social influencer on many social media networks.
A Dileep All-Time Classic Told for Our Times
Dileep is back in his comfort zone — the debonair “guy next door” with a golden heart. Famed for his spontaneous talent to amuse family crowds, the actor gives a retro yet contemporary performance. His on-screen depiction of Prince appears authentic, endearing, and comic, reminding us of his past successes.
What makes this role stand out is the way in which Dileep is able to sustain the emotional burden of a man torn between domestic obligations and personal bliss, even while he rides out the whirlwind of social media’s crazy pull.
Social Media, Fake News, and Generational Clashes: A Relevant Subtext
In the second half, the film delves into more profound concerns — primarily the dark side of social media. From fake news to digital addiction, and from influencer culture to the generation gap, the story gears up to explore how the virtual world impacts true relationships.
Without being overly preachy, the film throws subtle jabs at today’s “influencer culture.” It paints a realistic portrait of how social media can interfere with personal lives, especially in marriages, creating rifts between generations and exposing vulnerabilities.
Comic Relief with a Strong Ensemble Cast
The humor of the film is its biggest asset. Support actors Siddique, Bindu Panicker, and Johny Antony provide laugh-out-loud moments that maintain the light and breezy tone. Bindu Panicker’s role even gets a nostalgic mention of her 1998 work in Sreekrishnapurathe Nakshathrathilakkam, giving long-term fans an added bonus.
Manju Pillai gives a sincere performance, balancing the film on emotional moments. Raaniya, as Chinju Rani, also receives a special mention for bringing nuance to playing Prince’s influencer-wife.
Music, Nostalgia, and Udit Narayan’s Touch
A pleasant surprise for the fans is a song by veteran playback singer Udit Narayan, which brings the nostalgic touch. The soundtrack synchronizes well with the mood of the film — happy in the first half and reflective in the second.
The Flaws: Predictability and Underused Characters
Though the movie manages to entertain, it does dip into formulaic storytelling in certain sections. The punch at the end is missing, and some characters — such as those acted by Dhyan Sreenivasan and Aswin Jose — are underdeveloped and hardly make a difference to the story.
These flaws, however, do not go far in overshadowing the endearing lead performance and universal family themes.
Final Verdict: A Feel-Good Ride with a Meaningful Message
Barring minor drawbacks, “Prince and Family” is a clean family entertainer which brings back Dileep to his area of strength. The blend of humour, emotion, and opportune social comment adds to the movie’s broad appeal for the young and old.
If you are in search of a simple but meaningful film which makes you smile, ponder, and perhaps get a tear in your eyes, Prince and Family is well worth the price.
