Cyclone Mocha is wreaking havoc through the northwestern Myanmar coast, reaching wind speeds of over 200 km per hour and disrupting communication networks.

The cyclone also uprooted trees, laid waste to several Rohingya displacement camps, caused stormy conditions in low-lying areas.

Rescuers early Monday evacuated about 1,000 people trapped by seawater 3.6 meters (12 feet ) deep along western Myanmar’s coast and hundreds were injured, according to an AP report.

According to AFP, the military junta in Myanmar said at least five people were killed and some residents were injured damaging more than 860 houses and 14 hospitals or clinics.

Communications were slowly being restored in Rakhine state’s capital Sittwe, which is home to around 150,000 people, reported AFP.

In neighbouring Bangladesh, officials said they had evacuated 750,000 people due to the adverse weather conditions.
