Bayern Munich suffered a shock 3-2 loss to Bochum on Sunday, suffering a third successive defeat for the first time since 2015 and leaving them eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race.

Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel said ‘the loss today wasn’t justified. We were extremely unlucky.’

The result followed a 3-0 league defeat to Leverkusen last weekend and a 1-0 loss against Lazio in the Champions League as Tuchel came under pressure.

Bayern Munich played with ten men: play by play

Bayern Munich were reduced to 10 men with 13 minutes remaining when Dayot Upamecano gave away a penalty and got red carded.

Bochum’s Stoeger blasted the penalty past Bayern Munich’s legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to give his team a 3-1 lead.

Harry Kane scored with three minutes remaining to get his team back into the match but Bayern Munich were unable to equalize later in the match.

The visitors hit early, with Jamal Musial scoring at 14 minutes, to give the German champions’ their first goal in over three hours of football.

Bochum withstood the Bayern Munich pressure early on, before Takuma Asano levelled after 38 minutes, shooting a low shot past Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer on a counter attack.

Bayern Munich fell behind just six minutes later, as Bochum’s Keven Schlotterbeck headed in a corner.

Bayern Munich applies pressure in second half

Bayern Munich turned the screws early in the second-half but the match was delayed for 12 minutes by fan protests, after which Bochum came back against the champions.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, Bayern Munich’s Upamecano clashed with Stoeger at a corner and was sent off, reducing them to ten.

As rain hit the ground, Stoeger hit his penalty low and hard to the right, past Neuer at full stretch.

Bayern Munich’s  teenage sensation Mathys Tel set up Kane to find net after 87 minutes, but then Kane wasted a golden chance to seize a third.

Stoeger said, ‘It’s an enormous relief. We thought we could get a point and we got three.’

‘I think all of Bochum is proud of the performance we delivered.’

Bochum coach Thomas Letsch added, ‘To win against Bayern is especially nice, given they’re a team stacked with talent.’

Tuchel lamented his side’s wastefulness in attack, saying that Bayern Munich had more than enough high-quality chances thar normally would be put away.

Tuchel to stay on at Bayern Munich

Despite the current turmoil and mounting losses, Bayern Munich’s bosses are keen on keeping Thomas Tuchel as head coach of the team.

According to a report from Bild, the club still does not have plans to replace Tuchel.

In addition, there’s currently no suitable successor on the market.

Moreover, former coach Hansi Flick is not considered a capable replacement because Uli Hoeneß allegedly is not fully convinced that Flick can turn things around.

This is all speculation at the moment and there is no confirmation Bayern Munich will move on from Tuchel.

Bayern Munich bosses still want to hold on to Tuchel and finish the season with him.

Tuchel’s side are in second place on 50 points, eight behind Leverkusen and four above third-placed VfB Stuttgart. Bochum moved up to 11th place on 25 points and appear safe from relegation.

Despite the widening gap with Leverkusen, Bayern Munich said Tuchel will remain in his position for Saturday’s Bundesliga game at home against RB Leipzig.

Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka said of the team’s current Bundesliga campaign, ‘It feels like a horror movie that is not ending. Everything is going against us at the moment.’

Bochum vs Bayern Munich stopped twice as chaos ensued

Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga match against Bochum had to be halted on two occasions and the players were taken off as objects were thrown on the field.

Fans staged their protest by launching tennis balls onto the football pitch, after Kane missed.

The game was stopped after 25 minutes. Although it was allowed to resume, it was halted again just nine minutes into the second half and the players were taken down the tunnel. Play resumed around 10 minutes later.

German football matches have been stopped regularly in recent weeks as part of an ongoing protest.

Fans have been throwing tennis balls, gold chocolate coins and apples onto the field to voice their anger against foreign investment in the German league.

Fans are protesting against the Bundesliga’s investment plan

The fans are demanding an end to a controversial plan from the league to sell a stake of future revenue to a private equity investor.

The campaign to stop it was given a boost this week when prospective buyer Blackstone dropped out of talks. However, there remains one more leading candidate.

Such protests have increased on recent matchdays with almost every league game on Saturday and Sunday having been briefly interrupted.

After the restart, Bochum managed to pick up some momentum and went on to equalize through Takuma Asano before Schlotterbeck put his team ahead just before half-time.

After the second interruption, as Upamecano was sent off in a second consecutive game and Stoger scored a penalty to make it 3-1, the damage had already been done and they Bayern Munich had a third consecutive defeat after  on their hands after the recent losses to Bayer Leverkusen and Lazio.

Is Harry Kane not happy at Bayern Munich?

Many feel star striker Harry Kane is  ‘not happy’ with the way Bayern Munich are playing at the moment, leading to abject failure for both the players and the coach.

The players are not performing at the best level, the coach seems to have lost his grip on the locker room energy, many feel, the chemistry is not there for the eleven.

Many feel  Bayern Munich may have broken down to a state where it cannot be fixed and the board knows it. Bayern Munich is headed down the path to no trophies at present.

Upamecano got sent off for the second consecutive match after his dismissal in Wednesday’s Champions League loss to Lazio.

Bayern Munich is currently showing little by way of a game plan, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Italy’s Lazio in their round-of-16 first leg.

‘Now (the title) does not look very realistic,’ Tuchel said. ‘But last season we believed until the end and we were rewarded. So we will keep working at it.’

About the pressure on him following his team’s third loss, Tuchel said that happens after every defeat.

‘The ‘how’ we played is key. The ‘how’ was good today and that’s why today’s 90 minutes are very different from the second half at Lazio or the game at Leverkusen,’ he said.

Bundesliga top scorer Harry Kane should have made it 2-0 but he missed a sitter in front of goal in the 19th, firing wildly over the bar before the game was interrupted.

The 15-minute stop in play did wonders for Bochum’s game, with Asano completing a quick break to stun Bayern with a 38th-minute equalizer.

They completed their comeback before the break, when Schlotterbeck headed the corner in the 44th.

Stoeger’s 78th-minute penalty put the game to bed after Upamecano was sent off for elbowing an opponent in the box, with a second booking.

Kane tapped in his 25th league goal in the 87th minute for some midnight fireworks, but Bochum was holding on to the three points.

There was also drama after the final whistle with Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich leaving for the changing rooms after a heated verbal chat with Bayern Munich assistant coach Zsolt Loew.

As of now, it seems like things will remain the same for next weekend’s matchup against RB Leipzig. Another loss could bury the Bavarians in the Bundesliga title race. It appears, however, that Bayern Munich’s board believes that Tuchel will help the team rise from the ashes.

Bayern Munich Vs Bochum: Player of the Match: Kevin Stoger (Bochum)

It had to be Stoger for Bochum, though it could have gone to a number of Bochum players.
After the first interruption Anthony Losilla expertly supported Stoger in controlling the game.
Schlotterbeck held the back line admirably and Christopher Antwi-Adjei was making life very difficult for Bayern Munich.
Stoger showed much character throughout the game and that stood out for many, particularly because this feels so lacking in Bayern Munich’s side at present.
Stoger is sure to be called for national duties for Austria based on this performance.
