Bayern Munich suffered a shock 3-2 loss to Bochum on Sunday, suffering a third successive defeat for the first time since 2015 and leaving them eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race.
Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel said ‘the loss today wasn’t justified. We were extremely unlucky.’
The result followed a 3-0 league defeat to Leverkusen last weekend and a 1-0 loss against Lazio in the Champions League as Tuchel came under pressure.
Bayern Munich played with ten men: play by play
Bayern Munich were reduced to 10 men with 13 minutes remaining when Dayot Upamecano gave away a penalty and got red carded.
Bochum’s Stoeger blasted the penalty past Bayern Munich’s legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to give his team a 3-1 lead.
Harry Kane scored with three minutes remaining to get his team back into the match but Bayern Munich were unable to equalize later in the match.
The visitors hit early, with Jamal Musial scoring at 14 minutes, to give the German champions’ their first goal in over three hours of football.
Bochum withstood the Bayern Munich pressure early on, before Takuma Asano levelled after 38 minutes, shooting a low shot past Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer on a counter attack.
Bayern Munich fell behind just six minutes later, as Bochum’s Keven Schlotterbeck headed in a corner.
Bayern Munich applies pressure in second half
Bayern Munich turned the screws early in the second-half but the match was delayed for 12 minutes by fan protests, after which Bochum came back against the champions.
With just over 10 minutes remaining, Bayern Munich’s Upamecano clashed with Stoeger at a corner and was sent off, reducing them to ten.
As rain hit the ground, Stoeger hit his penalty low and hard to the right, past Neuer at full stretch.
Bayern Munich’s teenage sensation Mathys Tel set up Kane to find net after 87 minutes, but then Kane wasted a golden chance to seize a third.
Stoeger said, ‘It’s an enormous relief. We thought we could get a point and we got three.’
‘I think all of Bochum is proud of the performance we delivered.’
Bochum coach Thomas Letsch added, ‘To win against Bayern is especially nice, given they’re a team stacked with talent.’
Tuchel lamented his side’s wastefulness in attack, saying that Bayern Munich had more than enough high-quality chances thar normally would be put away.
Tuchel to stay on at Bayern Munich
Despite the current turmoil and mounting losses, Bayern Munich’s bosses are keen on keeping Thomas Tuchel as head coach of the team.
According to a report from Bild, the club still does not have plans to replace Tuchel.
In addition, there’s currently no suitable successor on the market.
Moreover, former coach Hansi Flick is not considered a capable replacement because Uli Hoeneß allegedly is not fully convinced that Flick can turn things around.
This is all speculation at the moment and there is no confirmation Bayern Munich will move on from Tuchel.
Bayern Munich bosses still want to hold on to Tuchel and finish the season with him.
Tuchel’s side are in second place on 50 points, eight behind Leverkusen and four above third-placed VfB Stuttgart. Bochum moved up to 11th place on 25 points and appear safe from relegation.
Despite the widening gap with Leverkusen, Bayern Munich said Tuchel will remain in his position for Saturday’s Bundesliga game at home against RB Leipzig.
Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka said of the team’s current Bundesliga campaign, ‘It feels like a horror movie that is not ending. Everything is going against us at the moment.’
