U.S. President Joe Biden has arrived in Kyiv in a surprise visit ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion, according to footage published by local media.

A US president meeting Ukraine’s leader in the heart of the capital city, in the middle of a full-scale conflict, is being viewed as significant and symbolic.

A special meeting of EU defence ministers slated for 8-9 March will provide a chance for countries to provide ammunition from their stocks.

Moscow’s troops have been battling to break through Ukrainian defences around in the town in the Donbas region.

The Russian Ministry of Defence recently made an assessment on the losses of the Russian military.

In its intelligence update this morning, it says ‘the ‘elite’ 155th and 40th Naval Infantry Brigades have sustained ‘very high losses’ in the coal mining town of Vuhledar, in the eastern Donetsk region to the east of the country.

It says it has left these brigades ‘likely combat ineffective.’

The MoD says casualties also remain high in the city of Bakhmut.

Ukraine’s President Zelensky has described the situation as ‘very difficult,’ adding ‘we are breaking the invader.’

Biden will also head to Poland today where he will meet with his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda.

In a statement released yesterday, the White House said the pair would rally for support in Ukraine.
