BankBank holidays 2025

If you have banking work scheduled, take note—May 1, 2025, is International Labour Day, a public holiday celebrated in most regions of India to commemorate workers’ rights and efforts. Since the day is marked with official closures in some states, most people are left wondering: Will banks be open on May 1?

Each year, confusion arises when customers show up at bank branches on public holidays, only to find them closed. If you’re planning a bank visit on Labour Day 2025, this article breaks down everything you need to know.

What Is the Importance of May 1 in India?

Also referred to as May Day or International Workers’ Day, Labour Day 2025 is on Thursday, May 1. The day commemorates the achievements and contributions of workers and has its origins in the late 19th-century labor movements.

In India, Labour Day is a public holiday in several states, including:

  • Maharashtra
  • Tamil Nadu
  • West Bengal

India started celebrating Labour Day in 1923, and it also happens to be Maharashtra Day, which is celebrated for the establishment of the state in 1960.

Therefore, banks, schools, and the stock exchanges (NSE and BSE) will be closed on May 1, 2025, in some states.

Will Banks Remain Closed Across the Country on May 1, 2025?

As per the RBI bank holiday calendar, holidays are determined by state-specific festivals and events along with national holidays. May 1 is not a compulsory nationwide bank holiday but is celebrated in most states.

Apart from Labour Day, May 1 is also the foundation day of states such as Gujarat and Maharashtra and hence is a bank holiday in these states as well.

States Where Banks Will Remain Closed on May 1, 2025

The following list contains states where banks will remain closed on Thursday, May 1:

  • Assam
  • Bihar
  • Goa
  • Gujarat
  • Manipur
  • Karnataka
  • Kerala
  • Tamil Nadu
  • Telangana
  • West Bengal
  • Tripura
  • Jammu & Kashmir
