Recently, there has been a growing awareness and conversation surrounding American beauty standards. From the rise of body positivity movements to the increased acceptance of diverse representations in the media, American beauty standards are transforming. But what’s caused this shift?

Body Positivity and Size Inclusivity

The body positivity movement has challenged our perception of traditional beauty. It promotes self-acceptance and body diversity, encouraging people to embrace their unique shapes, sizes, and appearances. As a result, there has been a rise in size inclusivity in the fashion industry, with more brands expanding their ranges to cater to a diverse clientele.

The Rise of Natural Beauty

There is a growing movement towards embracing natural beauty, despite us living in a world of heavily edited images and unrealistic beauty standards. People are beginning to prioritize self-care and holistic approaches to beauty, focusing on skincare, wellness, and mental well-being. The emphasis is shifting from covering up perceived flaws to embracing one’s unique features and enhancing natural beauty.

The Influence of Plastic Surgery

Although there is a push for natural beauty and body positivity, plastic surgery is still a very popular option to enhance your natural beauty. There are over 9,540 plastic surgeons currently employed in the US, according to Zippa. While the desire to enhance one’s appearance is not new, there is a noticeable change in the motivations behind these procedures. In the past, plastic surgery was often associated with conforming to a narrow and unrealistic beauty ideal. However, in recent years, there has been a shift towards embracing individuality and enhancing your unique features.

The Rise of Influencer Culture

One key factor in the changing beauty standards among millennials, in particular, is the rise of influencer culture. Social media influencers have become powerful voices in the beauty industry, promoting a more inclusive and relatable image of beauty. Influencers often prioritize natural beauty, and self-acceptance, promoting body positivity and encouraging us to embrace our quirks.

Breaking Age Barriers in Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatments have traditionally been associated with teenagers. However, a surprising fact is that one in five orthodontic patients is over 21. This indicates a shift in societal attitudes towards adult orthodontics, challenging the notion that braces are solely for adolescents. Today, more than ever, many people are prioritizing dental health and a straight smile.

Embracing Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair loss can significantly impact one’s self-esteem and confidence. While hair transplant surgery has been available for some time, there has been a notable increase in its acceptance and normalization. If you’re considering hair transplant surgery, know it is normally safe when performed by a qualified, experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. However, it is crucial to recognize that individuals vary in their physical reactions and healing abilities, and the outcome is never completely predictable.

Redefining Beauty in Media

The media plays a powerful role in shaping millennials’ standards and perceptions. There has been a shift towards showcasing a broader representation of beauty. Advertisements and media campaigns now feature individuals of diverse ethnicities, body types, and gender identities.

Embracing Non-Traditional Beauty Standards

Millennials have been instrumental in expanding the definition of beauty by embracing non-traditional standards. This generation celebrates diverse body types, gender expressions, and cultural backgrounds. They challenge the previously dominant Eurocentric beauty ideals and advocate for a more inclusive and representative beauty industry.

American beauty standards are changing. The rise of body positivity movements, the increasing acceptance of diverse representations in the media, and the growing popularity of natural beauty all indicate a shift towards embracing individuality, inclusivity, and self-acceptance. While progress is still being made, our society continues to move toward redefining beauty and celebrating the unique characteristics that make each of us beautiful.
