Afghanistan vs Ireland: Afghanistan fails to put up big total on Day 1

Afghanistan vs Ireland Live Score: Mark Adair snapped five wickets for the Irish as Afghanistan failed to score big on Day 1. Powered by a five-wicket haul from the 27-year-old seam bowling all-rounder, Ireland managed to run through the Afghanistan batting for 155 before tea on Day 1 of their Test at the Tolerance Oval on Wednesday.

Naveed Zadran removed Ireland skipper Andrew Balbirnie and Moor up top as Afghanistan took to the filed. Afghanistan vs Ireland is a one-off Test match being held at the Tolerance Oval in Abu Dhabi.  Ireland were at 80/2 at the time of this article.

Afghanistan was recently thrashed in a one-off Test against Sri Lanka. They will be hoping to get in a good performance against Ireland under Hashmatullah Shahid who has had a fabulous World Cup and will lead the Afghan side.

Ireland last played against Zimbabwe in the multi-format series which was a closely fought series eventually won by the Ireland.

Led by Balbirnie in unfamiliar conditions, the Irish would be hoping to put up an inspired performance in Afghanistan vs Ireland.

Afghanistan vs Ireland Live Score: Campher on the charge

Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat but could only amass 155 in their first innings.

Janat found some valuable runs with boundaries for an unbeaten 41 and Naveed Zadran held one end to give Afghanistan a fighting total for the first innings.

After the initial jitters, Afghanistan settled in as it was hard work for the Irish bowlers as the pitch offered little to them. Ibrahim Zadran led the way with a gritty fifty.

Debutant Barry McCrarthy had a good start in Tests as he delivered sharp deliveries to the stumps, beat the outside-edge with gentle outswingers and testing short balls.

Naveed tightened his defence to keep the bowlers at bay, but could not hold on as the runs went down to a trickle. Janat and Naveed put up a mere 23 in 10 overs.

Wickets at regular intervals meant Afghanistan were not able to build partnerships. Curtis Campher nicked off Nijat Masood for a two-ball duck and Zahir Khan was bowled by Adair, to leave Janat at the other end and a total of 155 on the board. Five wickets for Adair, who’s been the pick of the bowlers for the Irish.

Afghanistan got that early wicket they needed via Zadran, and he almost made it two. Campher decided to take the counter attack to Afghanistan. Two boundaries in two overs: first an elegant cover drive, then as hard a pull shot you’d have ever seen.

Peter Moor got cleaned up, but it is a no ball, followed by a shout for LBW, which is given. Moor reviews straight away and it’s missing leg stump. Moor survives again.
Ireland have lost both their openers but it seems as if Curtis Campher has been on the charge since the start, now with a fierce cut past the diving backward square fielder for four. Fifty up for the Irish inside 12 overs.
A short of a length delivery and Moor somehow found a way to drag that back onto his stumps, finally Afghanistan get their man and  have a way back in.
Naveed Zadran struck in just the 4th over to get Balbirnie to flick and miss which leads to the ball hitting him on the pad. Ireland don’t review and he’s walking. Ireland are two down at 80, with both openers back in the pavilion.

Adair said about the first inningsWe would have been delighted if we had got them cheaper, it got quite niggly and quite difficult. Massive, we did the cap presentation last night and we have played a lot of white-ball cricket together. Nice to see a few guys coming in on debut and make an impact straightaway. You can see how much it means for the guys to make their debut. I’m absolutely buzzed. The bowlers have done their job, we have taken 10 wickets, it’s now up to the batters to go and give us a lead and then we will try and win a Test match.’
