Sayan Chatterjee, New Delhi, September 23, 2024—The profound historical bond between India and Israel was celebrated with full vigour today at the Haifa Victory Day event, organised by the Forum for Awareness of National Security (FANS) in New Delhi. The event, which took place at the iconic Teen Murti Haifa Chowk, marked a significant chapter in the two nations’ shared military history, emphasizing the deep-rooted camaraderie that continues to flourish today.
India and Israel’s bilateral ties have evolved remarkably, rooted in contemporary political and economic partnerships and the sacrifices made over a century ago. The Battle of Haifa, fought on September 23, 1918, during World War I, is a pivotal historical moment. It is among the finest displays of Indian soldiers’ bravery and a significant turning point in India-Israel relations. Over 900 Indian cavalrymen, part of the Jodhpur, Mysore, and Hyderabad Lancers, liberated the city of Haifa from the Ottoman Empire. This valour laid the foundation for India-Israel relations, which now stand firm, marked by co-operation in defence, technology, and cultural exchange.
The event began with a musical rendition of the patriotic anthem Vande Mataram by the Le Rythme musical group, setting a solemn and reverent tone for the proceedings. Following this, a wreath-laying ceremony took place, honouring the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the battle. Several distinguished guests graced the event, including Israel’s Ambassador to India, Mr. Reuven Azar, and Dr. Indresh Kumar, National Executive Committee Member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Lieutenant General R.N. Singh, National President of FANS, was the first to address the gathering. He narrated the heroic account of Indian soldiers during the Haifa campaign, highlighting the supreme sacrifices they made under arduous conditions. He stated, “This victory, achieved in the face of adversity, is one of the greatest feats in India’s pre-independence military history.”
General Singh underscored that the bravery of Indian soldiers during this time laid the foundation for the enduring friendship between India and Israel. “The bond between our nations is destined to grow stronger, built on shared values and mutual respect,” he concluded, calling for more such events to honour this historical connection.
Ambassador of Israel to India, HE. Reuven Azar extended his heartfelt thanks to the Indian soldiers who fought for Israel’s freedom long before it was an independent nation and, said, “Those brave Indian souls were not just soldiers; they were the guardians of Israeli freedom,” Azar remarked, acknowledging the pivotal role they played in shaping the modern Israeli state. He emphasised that the shared commitment to freedom, democracy, and justice continues to define India-Israel relations today.
Dr. Indresh Kumar’s speech was a powerful affirmation of the Indo-Israeli partnership. His rallying cry of “Jai Israel, Jai Bharat, Indo-Israel Friendship Zindabad” resonated deeply with the audience. Dr. Kumar parallels India’s struggle for independence and Israel’s fight against the Ottoman Empire. He lauded the courage of the Indian soldiers who, despite being outnumbered and poorly armed, achieved a decisive victory against the Ottomans. “Wars are not won by the number of soldiers or advanced weaponry but by the courage and zeal of those who fight,” he proclaimed, emphasising the unmatched bravery of Indian soldiers.
Dr. Kumar also expressed a hopeful vision for India’s future, wishing for a nation free from communalism, casteism, and gender discrimination, working alongside a strong Israel to usher in a peaceful and developed global order. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Mr Shoresh Bhattacharya, who acknowledged the contributions of all dignitaries, the 61 Cavalry, Delhi Police, NCC cadets, Le Rythme musical group, Goyola school children, and the tireless efforts of soldiers who defend the motherland. He thanked the organising committee, which included Major General S. Bhattacharya, Shri Rajesh Mahajan, and Dr Rajeev Ranjan, for their dedication to the event.
The program concluded with the Indian national anthem, leaving the audience with renewed pride and solidarity. The celebration of Haifa Victory Day commemorated a pivotal historical moment. It reaffirmed the enduring strength of the India-Israel relationship, as both nations continue to stand together for peace, prosperity, and global security. In a world often marred by conflicts, this annual event reminds us of the power of unity, courage, and shared values, which bind nations and people together across continents.
